2011 Canadian Fly-In Fishing Newsletter

The 2010 season has come and gone, and we hope that everyone enjoyed their trip with us. The season began with a little bit of a hitch, as Chimo did not have their Otter in operation, which made getting everyone out expeditiously, a little more difficult. The Otter did not go into service until the end of July, so we had to rely on multiple flights to the same cabin, in order to get some of the groups and all their gear out. We hope that this didn’t inconvenience anyone or affect their trip. The rebuilt Otter (now a Turbine Otter) has worked out well since its arrival, having an increased payload and being a little faster than the piston version.
In striving to continually improve the conditions at the cabins, I have made the following repairs/upgrades. Thicketwood, Murdock and Mimi North all have new walkways from the dock to the shore. Murdock and Thicketwood also have an extra solar panel installed to help keep the cabin batteries charged. The cabins at Job and Robert North were both raised up off the ground, leveled front to back and side to side, and had  new posts and some beams replaced. Porch floors were painted at Robert North, Job, Thicketwood and Knox. Robert North had laminate flooring installed in the dining area and the rotten sections of the front walls replaced. Peisk South had its kitchen floor painted and quite a few trees were cut down to brighten the cabin and to allow the sun to reach the solar panels. New, larger woodsheds were built at Robert South, Job and Peisk South. All the cabins received new propane regulators at the dock and cabin to make them all uniform. Since 2009, all the cabins have received new propane stoves. Peisk North, Job, Robert North and Robert South have new BBQ’s. I have moved most of the freezers into the screened in porches to help alleviate the heat build up inside the cabin from having the water heater, fridge and freezer and stove all in the same little area. This should help improve the performance of both the fridge and the freezer as the ambient temperature surrounding these appliances, has a great affect on their ability to cool/freeze.
The biggest change everyone will notice is that each cabin will now have a 2000W generator present. The primary reason for this is to supplement the solar panels in keeping the water pump batteries as well as the cabin batteries charged in case there is an extended period of minimal sunlight. The cabins will all have 2 electrical outlets inside the cabin, one in the porch and one in the boat house. The outlets will only work when the generators are running, and they use the same gas as is used in the boats. The secondary reason for the generators is to provide power to those who require the use of a breathing machine at night. This does not mean that you can bring up all sorts of electrical items now, as the generators are primarily to be used as a backup to the solar power. We will be monitoring the generators usage, and if we find they are being abused, we will remove them.
The water levels this year were a little bit higher than normal, but nowhere near the levels they were in 2009. Towards the end of September, the level was coming close to where it was in 2009, but luckily it receded quickly in October.
Some of the projects on the agenda for 2011 are:
- Repair the floors in the porch and cabin at Murdock as well as repair the rotten boards at the front of the cabin
- Raise and level Robert South; replace the shingles and the windows; replace the deck and the walkway to the dock
- Repair the rotten sections of wall at Mimi North and replace the deck
- New BBQ’s for Mimi North, Mimi South and Murdock
- Reinforce the transoms on the boats

We appreciate your patronage, and will strive to make your trip as pleasant as possible. We also want to wish everyone a safe holiday and look forward to seeing all of you in 2011.
